THE BASELINE

The Baseline is reimagining and repurposing the underutilized spaces beneath highway ramps to create new public and community open space.  Located at Dutch Kills and Jackson Avenues in Long Island City, Queens. Designed by STUDIO V, the project transforms a barren asphalt lot into a vibrant community hub featuring innovative gardens, a dragon-themed playground, dog run, and a dedicated arts courtyard in collaboration with local cultural organization SculptureCenter.

Developed in collaboration with non-profit Friends of the Baseline, in conjunction with the support of NYC Council Member Julie Wan, NYC Department of Transportation, a Downtown Revitalization Grant from New York State Governor Kathy Hochul, LIC Partnership, and Court Square Civic Association, the Baseline is the result of years of community advocacy for open space in one of New York City’s most park-starved neighborhoods.

With its colorful, sustainable design and flexible spaces for gathering, and rain gardens to treat stormwater runoff from the highways above, The Baseline sets a powerful precedent for converting overlooked infrastructure into inclusive, creative public realm.
