ON EDGE

We love edges.

The forgotten places. The leftover spaces. The gaps within cities.

The spaces left by the abandoned waterfronts, the slashes in a city’s fabric left by infrastructure, highways, rail lines. Empty waterfronts. Former industrial zones. Abandoned ruins. Polluted brownfields. Spaces under highway ramps and over rail lines.

Somehow these places come to the Studio. These places compel communities and clients to reach out to us seeking new architectural, urban, and spatial solutions.

Edges offer the opportunities to explore so many of the Studio’s themes: Combining historic architecture with contemporary design with historic architecture. Building over or under infrastructure. Creating equity and opportunity by reconnecting communities. Reconnecting isolated vestiges of failed urban renewal. Transforming industrial ruins.

In these liminal spaces, where the edges of cities dissolve, we find the greatest potential for design—innovative, bold, and transformative. These are the places where we reconnect our communities, where we forge new connections, and where we reinvent our cities.
